A good all-rounder with a high standard of food and an impressive setting

Much like the restaurant’s packed ladies’ night, the brunch at Nobu is buzzing. On our visit, every table is full and the atmosphere is lively. Outside is quieter and more idyllic, with just a handful of tables populating the small terrace. Here you can really enjoy the stunning panoramic views of the sea and skyline, signature mocktail in hand (try the coconut apple).

A small selection of starters to share are served to the table, including mini chicken tacos and bite-sized pieces of sashimi. On the small buffet, you’ll find plenty of maki rolls, nigiri and ceviche, plus foie gras and oysters. It’s all delicious, and the quality of ingredients shines through (we are also impressed by the amount of vegetarian-friendly options), but we aren’t blown away.

The balance of flavours in the ceviche, for example, is too subtle, and could definitely use some punchier waves of citrus or chilli. That said, the crispy rice station is standout, where you can pile shredded crab onto perfect, golden cubes.

Each diner then orders one main from an à la carte menu, which features plenty of classic Nobu dishes such as the soft shell crab tempura, the famous black cod or the decadently buttery Chilean sea bass. In contrast to the buffet, this is all exceptional.

What we love the most, however, are the modern Japanese twists on traditional brunch staples, like the duo of New York bagels with smoked salmon and tofu cream, the crispy rice eggs Benedict and the fluffy sugar-dusted waffles with light, refreshing matcha ice cream.

Smaller groups may be disappointed at being limited to just one main and dessert per person. It’s a menu definitely suited to larger groups, as you can order a number of different things to share. We know it seems churlish to complain about having too much choice, and in fairness the portions are huge (we aren’t able to finish either of ours). But, still, when it comes to brunch, we feel a wider variety and smaller portions are the way to go.

That doesn’t stop this, however, from being a lovely afternoon out. The quality of the food is consistent, even if the flavours aren’t. And the faults we find are minor and by no means result in a bad meal.

From the setting and atmosphere to the food, everything is still excellent enough to be enjoyed on special occasions or with visiting guests you’re looking to impress. Overall, it’s a great brunch that’s worth trying.
