City life: National Museum of Qatar to open, new e-commerce and more

National Museum of Qatar to open
It’s been a long wait and Qatar Museums has finally announced that the National Museum of Qatar will open to the public on March 28, 2019. The spectacular new building has been designed by Jean Nouvel and tells the story of Qatar and its people from more than 700 million years ago through to today.

The experience promises to be immersive. The 40,000sqm museum incorporates a historic monument in the centre and seamlessly integrates several innovative artworks from Qatari and international artists around it. The very centrepiece of the new museum is the restored palace of Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani (1880-1957), son of the founder of modern Qatar. This building, in former times, was both the home of the Royal Family and the seat of Government, and was subsequently the site of the original National Museum.

Nouvel’s dynamic design combines Qatar’s geography, history and rich culture. The entire structure is modelled after a desert rose that appears from wind and sand with crystalline forms, curved discs, intersections and plenty of other elements.
The National Museum of Qatar is organised in three chapters through 11 galleries – Beginnings, Life in Qatar and Building the Nation. In simple terms, you’ll likely be walking through almost 3km of experiences that have shaped Qatar. That includes artworks, storytelling, music, aromas and essentially an engagement of all your senses is what you can expect from this incredible piece of history.

Artworks commissioned for the museum include a piece by Qatari artist Ali Hassan at the ground floor public entrance, a piece by Qatari artist and arts patron Sheikh Hassan bin Mohammed bin Ali Al Thani at the entrance to the galleries and a sculpture by Iraqi artist Ahmed Al Bahrani outdoors.
Opens March 28, 2019.

Al Enna project officially launches

The tourism development project Al Enna, designed to enhance camping in Qatar, is in full swing. Visitors can begin their experience at Al Seef, a Sealine beach area, which can accommodate 15,000 people. There are showers, giant screens, 30 food outlets, beach cabins, chairs and a play area. Visitors can rent quad bikes and ATVs in a 300,000 sq m space dedicated to bikers. The final zone is Al Mashab (the bonfire) where all cultural and heritage activities are to be organised during weekends throughout the camping season. There’s a souq area, too, for all services and supplies. If we’re being honest, this is possibly the most exciting news we’ve heard in a while.
