Imagine a life-size Spiderman staring you in the face whenever you enter your bedroom. It could happen. Especially if you shop at new store Doha Comics. Inside the Pearl-Qatar shop you’ll find scores and scores of comic books, T-shirts and figures. The kind of thing you usually have to order from overseas is now available right here in the city. From Marvel to Manga, taking in DC and plenty of less famous titles, there’s loads to keep everyone’s inner geek happy.
The founder of Doha’s very first comic book store, Saeed Al Mohannadi, is clearly a very passionate geek (and he doesn’t keep it hidden). He’s been working on the project since the end of 2016 and is delighted to see it come to life. “I’m a huge comic book reader and fan and enjoyed them a great deal when I was studying abroad,” he says. “When I came back to Doha, I found no stores locally, which meant I was reading less and missing out on the newest material.”
Besides Marvel and DC, the store also stocks several independent publishers such as Image, IDW, Boom, Dynamite and Viz – one of the biggest publishers of anime.
But Doha Comics is a pop-culture store that is about more than just comic books. You’ll find limited-edition quarter-scale action figures, regular action figures, T-shirts, collectibles and other merchandise. The T-shirt collection not only covers the comic book world but also movies and TV, so don’t be surprised if Game of Thrones’ Joffrey Lannister is in the window giving you a wicked grin when you walk past.
While you can buy TV show and Japanese action figures elsewhere, here you’ll find Marvel and DC superheroes among them.
“We want to introduce a culture of reading more and get more people involved in comic books,” Al Mohannadi says. “That was a big reason we started, and we are quite surprised to see how much of a fan base there is in the city already.”
It’s also a place for gamers to get their hands on the latest titles. “We also do games and gaming products. You’ll find Metal Gear Solid, World of Warcraft, League of Legends and so on,” he says.
Al Mohannadi has big plans for the store and wants to expand the range available, introducing posters, cards, board games and masks in the coming months.
So next time you’re in the beautiful Qanat Quartier and see Wolverine walking towards you, you know where he’s come from.
