Enjoy a relaxed evening of art and food at the Radisson Blu Hotel

Food and art at Picasso's in Doha

One of the more relaxed evenings on the art and culture scene, this monthly event at the Radisson Blu Hotel is a picture perfect example of a good evening out.

Fed up of going to museums and want a more hands on approach to get your art and culture fix? If so, this could be the event for you. There’s only one place in Doha where you can enjoy refreshments, tapas nibbles and the opportunity to draw your own picture and take it home with you in the city, and this is at the monthly painting class at Picasso’s restaurant at the Radisson Blu Hotel.

Picture perfect
Time Out was invited to attend the evening, with the promise that it wouldn’t be too intimidating for those that are, quite honestly, hopeless at drawing (the whole Time Out team). The best bit about this class is that you don’t feel intimidated by the incredible artist next to you, and people are very encouraging about your not-so-masterpiece as they walk past. You can paint and eat as much as you want, taking time out from your artistic genius to fill yourself up with some of your typical Spanish bites at the buffet counter, making it something a little different.

What it’s all about
What’s the point of having a restaurant called Picasso’s if you can’t show off your own individual artistry? Starting at 7.30pm and running until 10.30pm, you turn up, have your food whenever you so wish, put your art apron on, get some paint and get painting. Every month there are themes – whether this is portraits, landscapes of scenery or anything else. There will be a small print out of a picture in front of you which you can copy, or you can go to the main table where there are a selection of a few hundred images to choose from, or you can just take inspiration from one and make your own version. Furthermore, you don’t have to follow the theme at all and you can go completely freestyle. Mental.

Getting tutored
Every month there is a designated artist in residence who is available to help out as little or as much as you like. This comes in handy when you are not quite sure what colour would go to what, which colours mix well or you just want a helping hand. Many people come back every month and the majority of the people attending the evening are very good at drawing. But, if you’re not the greatest artist in the world, it really must be stressed that it does not matter.

So when you’re full from eating and had a pleasant evening’s painting, the best thing of all is that you get to take it home with you and put it as pride of place on the mantelpiece.

This month’s event takes place on May 26. Over 21s only, QR210, inclusive of unlimited tapas and three complimentary refreshments.

Picasso’s, Radisson Blu Doha Hotel, Intersection of C-Ring Road and Salwa Road (4428 1428).
