Borovets, Bulgaria

Perfect for beginners who want to dip their toes in, and not freeze too much (this resort is known for its milder winter climate), Borovets also has a choice of luxury hotels, should the shared chalet or B&B option just not appeal. It is a modern ski resort located in the Rila mountains with restaurants, bars and shops in a gorgeous Alpine setting, plus stunning ski runs for beginners, intermediates and the properly advanced. Brasov, Romania

Fancy combining tales of myths and legends with a skiing holiday? The resort of Poina Brasov is situated close to Count Dracula’s castle in the medieval town of Brasov (complete with swooping bats and spooky turrets) and, best of all, the gentle ski slopes are ideal for beginners. This is one of the most visited resorts in Romania, with some seriously tough runs for the experienced, but caters well for families, too. Daily ski passes from QR95 for adults, QR53 for children.

Gulmarg in the Himalayas, India

Could it get more exciting than skiing in the Himalayas? The journey to Gulmarg ski resort – known as the heartland of winter sports in India – is an adventure in itself, with the final of the journey winding through pine forests to reach the peninsula, which is home to the Gulmarg Gondola, one of the world’s highest cable cars at 3,979 metres above sea level. You can heli-ski, snowboard and go tobogganing, too.

Harrachov, Czech Republic

Shahdag, Azerbaijan

With no direct flight this isn’t the easiest destination to reach, but the Shahdag mountain resort should still be top of your snow hit-list, with world-class skiing at a staggering 2,500 metres above sea level, in the shadow of the Caucasus mountains. Shymbulak, Kazakhstan

Season: December to April.

Located in the beautiful Zailiyskiy Alatau mountains in the Medeu Valley, at 2,260 metres above sea level, this resort is famed for its sunny blue skies that can mean the joy of zipping down the slopes without the heavy ski gear. The resort boasts six lifts and a gondola system that can handle up to 2,000 people per hour, so no lengthy queues for impatient kids, either. Result.
