What does it mean to you to be representing Qatar at the first Youth Olympic Games?
It means a lot to me. To represent my country at the Youth Olympics is a truly unique, once in a lifetime opportunity, and I hope to give my best ever performance there.
Are you looking forward to it?
I expect competition to be tough – there will be plenty of highly skilled gymnasts taking part.
Why did you take up gymnastics in the first place?
My mum took me to my first ever practice, as she believed that gymnastics is the basis of all sports – and I actually liked it. It’s tough, and you have to be committed – giving up lots of vacation time and days off for all of the training.
Have you travelled much for competitions before?
I have travelled extensively outside of the GCC, but I haven’t ever been to Singapore. But I will soon be off to take part in a camp in Hungary, which will help me prepare.
What are your plans after the Youth Olympics?
I will concentrate on my education. Perhaps I will play another sport – I would really like to take part in athletics when my gymnastics career is over.
Any other athletes or sports you like to watch?
My favourite athlete is Nastia Liukin, an American-Russian gymnast, and I enjoy watching diving and water ballet.
What advice would you give other young athletes?
My advice is to set goals. Most just say, ‘I want to go to the Olympics’, but to work hard, accomplish it and, at the same time, feel good about it is the real achievement. The encouragement of friends and family is also extremely important.
The Youth Olympic Games will take place in Singapore from August 14-26, with all athletes aged 14-18. More info at www.olympic.org.yog
