Souq Waqif

Without doubt the city’s most picturesque shopping landmark, Souk Waqif is more than just a tourist attraction. Qataris come here as they did decades ago to buy their spices and local dress, alongside awed tourists in search of old Arabia and its quirky offerings.

Because of the massive influx of Arabs from different parts of the Middle East, the tourist gems sold in Waqif are imported from as far away as Egypt. Local produce, like palm leaf baskets are sold alongside Syrian scarves and Yemeni honey. In fact, unconventional shoppers will find a wealth of, often useless, but highly collectable buys; the most notable are rifle holsters, ornate snuff boxes and a vast collection of kitsch perfume brands.
