Ask a Peruvian about Gastón Acurio and get ready to witness hyperventilation, screaming and crying, all at once. And all in happiness. That’s how loved he is, and that’s almost how excited we are for his first restaurant in the region. La Mar on first look is a sleek, modern space reminiscent of an architect’s futuristic dream house, enveloped with pillars of black, wood and cream.

We step out of the glass doors into a stunning outdoor area. Opening out onto the beach, the views are some of the most romantic in Doha. Seats are plentiful on the waterfront and in the main dining area, offering you a choice of looking at some cooking or the city.

The warm, friendly waiter helps us with an encyclopaedic knowledge of the menu that chef Acurio has exported so successfully across the world. We start with the clásico tiraditos, a beautifully plated combination of thinly-sliced white fish in leche de tigre (which translates to tiger’s milk), a classic citrus and spiced marinade that’s truly refreshing. The dish definitely tastes as sharp and vibrant as it looks. As an added bonus, our waiter regales us with the tradition of the dish, where wives would wait for their fisherman husbands to come home with the catch of the day and this would be prepared to whet their appetite on the docks.

Next, we sample Peruvian-style spring rolls, the tequeños. These are filled to the brim with creamy curried chicken and served with a side of rocoto cream (a combination of mayonnaise, garlic, cream, lime and rocoto peppers). This dish is sensational in flavour, it’s also grease-free and served in a crispy, feather-light shell.

For mains, we try the lomo saltado which is perfectly rich and hearty for a chilly winter night in Doha. Juicy, succulent beef tenderloin is plated on a bed of fresh onions, tomatoes and lightly fried potatoes. The pescado a la brasa isn’t one for the squeamish. It’s a whole fish wrapped in banana leaves, swimming in the leche de tigre sauce we can’t get enough of. With its beady eyes staring you out over dinner, it won’t win best looking dish of the year, but it amply makes up for that in aroma, texture and the taste.

Just when you thought Doha has seen the best of it all, La Mar sashays right past. Is the food as brilliant as the space, you ask? The answer is a resounding yes.
