After a good ten minute walk around Tawar Mall, we arrive to find Joe’s Crab Shack tucked away in a corner. We’ve heard about its popularity but luckily, there’s no long line to get in and we’re escorted in right away. From our seat, we’re facing the floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook Tawar Mall’s open area with lots of sunlight coming in. There are nets hanging on one side, brightly coloured surfboards on the other and a tacky disco light on the ceiling which we sincerely hope doesn’t go off. We love the beachy vibes. The waitstaff are all smiles and recommend starting with Joe’s classic sampler. There are some crispy chicken wings and a salty but brilliant crab dip with cream cheese and crab meat, served with tortilla chips. The highlight of the sampler really are great balls of fire. If you’re missing Jerry Lee Lewis’ reference, all you need to know is that these are panko-coated balls loaded with crab, other seafood, cream cheese and jalapeños. They’re deep-fried, but not too oily and taste just perfect. Meanwhile, the disco light goes off (which we dreaded) and the staff gather around and break into dance like a nineties band. It’s quite entertaining but we’re glad we don’t have to join in.

The Southern stuffed comes out next, one of the venue’s best-sellers. The grilled beef bacon-wrapped shrimp is served on a bed on Cajun rice with a few hushpuppies. The hushpuppies could be a little less crunchy, but the sweetish taste from the cornmeal nicely cuts through the saltiness from the bacon. The finale is the ragin’ Cajun, a big bucket of Dungeness and snow crabs with smoked beef sausages, shrimp, undercooked potatoes and corn on the cob. Put your plastic bibs on followed by the gloves and then use the tools to break into the most delicious Cajun-flavoured crustaceans.

Mall aside, Joe’s Crab Shack is a welcome addition to Doha’s limited seafood offerings.
