An original and ingenious take on Qatari fine-dining Discuss this article

I ronically, Doha’s dining scene lacks popular Qatari haunts. Their food is more exclusive and limited to few places that serve it very traditionally. So naturally, Walima with its contemporary take on Qatari classics, is a welcome addition.

Everything is very intriguing and overwhelming for the first few minutes, but as you settle in, the charm of the place sort of takes over and at this point, you’re filled with nothing but admiration for how the interiors undeniably bring about a whole new level of grandeur. It’s cool and contemporary yet cultured and classy at the same time.

The restaurant retains the same opulence the entire hotel boasts, but with a more Oriental touch. Charming, multi-coloured, Middle Eastern lamps hang from the ceiling adorning the aesthetic of the place, black and white striped walls and columns run along the lengths of the dining room and striking Arabesque decor prevails. There’s something wonderfully whimsical about this place.

Visuals all soaked in, we’re ready to order. The prawn salad is delightful with blood orange and avocado purée.The dressing has a distinct tangy flavour and while there could be more prawns (especially considering its QR125), the salad itself is light and summery. For mains, you can’t go wrong with a classic like machboos. It’s a whirlwind of spices with an incredibly well-cooked lamb shank in the middle being the star of the show. The flavoured rice with pomegranate seeds, nuts and fried onions comes in a glutton-friendly portion size.

Since we’re good on the surf and turf, we try the fragrant chicken salona. A Middle-Eastern stew in essence, chicken flavoured with dried lime, saffron and Arabic spices and cooked with potatoes and other veggies in a comforting tomato gravy and served
with basmati rice.

The staff are so well-dressed, with the women in jalabiyas serving with a smile. Picture yourself eating rich food in a dreamy, Arabian version of Alice in Wonderland, and you have Walima.

The bill (for two)
