Al Matbakh has recently been completely revamped and the new venue looks fabulous. It’s now an Indian restaurant that serves some classic dishes and shisha in a very pretty setting.

We’re taken to the “Blue Heaven” which is possibly the cosiest seating area in the restaurant. Everything is blue including the curtains and the lights – there’s something very palatial about the ambience in this corner. We also can’t help but notice the attention to detail is impeccable, from the table mats to the curtain holders.

The menu is short and sweet with a few good classics like nalli nihari and butter chicken. The paani puri is deconstructed and served in slanting little glasses and the chicken tikka is served over an actual mini charcoal barbecue. Nice.

The butter chicken isn’t too heavy or rich – in fact, it’s refreshingly light and delicious. Before dessert, try the nalli nihari (slow-cooked lamb cubes in lots of spicy gravy) for a real dose of heat. The gajar ka halwa (shredded carrots cooked with milk and sugar) is placed into a French tart, making it crunchy and enjoyable. Best for the finale.

Watch the roof retract and relax after dinner with some masala chai and have one the best evenings you can imagine.

The bottom line
Excellent ambience and great food.

Just back from my best dining experience in Doha since i arrived here over 7 months ago. It was an outstanding experience from start to finish with my arrival on level 3 walking out of the elevator and i seen the view of Doha City centre and the Corniche. We then were seated by our waiter Ibrahim who was so attentative and welcoming the whole night long. The restruant was modern with an arabic twist with an open kitchen where i could see our food being prepared. Before too long my wife was feeling cold and the waiters were straight over with a shawl and heater. Then the smell of spices, charcoal and food cooking was enough to make your mouth water within 30 seconds. We started with the arabic mezze which was unbeliveable and that was before i got onto the spectaclour main course, i had the Australian Ribeye Steak which was out of this world, every piece melted in my mouth and i wanted the experience to last so much longer that i took my time and chewed every piece until my jaw started to hurt.(Also to mention that i was with an international food critic A.K.A. Father in Law who was in awe of this wonderful piece of Ribeye Steak.) My wife had the Jumbo Shrimp which was sitting over the top of a bowl of charcoal and as every drop of juice dripped off the shrimp onto the charcoal all you could get was the aroma that was unique and one that will last with me for a long, long time and thats even before i had to try some and just melted into my seat. Ok after all that there was the home made chips, and creamed spinach and side salads all of which were complementary. Enough was enough we didnt want to spoil the evning and left wholly satisfied and assurred that we will be back again very soon.

Long live fine food and roof top dining at Al Matbakh-Rooftop Grill
