A luxurious lobby sets the tone for an evening at Al Nahham and this touch of class continues on your 25-minute trip to the restaurant in a top-of-the-range boat.

As we disembark and walk over the floating footbridge to reach the main lobby, we hear a four-person percussion band playing some energetic beats. We’re awestruck with the surrounding beauty, turquoise waters and overwater villas in the distance. No, this isn’t a Maldives travel feature. We’re off the coast of Doha in the gorgeous Banana Island Resort by Anantara and words do not do justice to the tranquility and exclusivity of this place.

The view from the outdoor seating area of Al Nahham is simply spectacular, and getting here just before sunset makes this experience even more perfect, as you watch how Doha transforms into a beautifully-lit night across the skyline.

The welcome drink is a delicious date concentrate mixed with rose water and dry fruits. We try some Arabic mezze, and absolutely love the muhammara. It has distinct flavours and is perfectly tangy with a hint of spiciness. There’s a little too much sesame, though. Out of the mixed grills (which are served still cooking nicely on the charcoal), the lamb chops are excellent, cooked in a mouth-wateringly tasty marinade and so tender you don’t even need a knife. The beef is just as great and the kofta is juicy. The chicken has more spices than its counterparts, and its smoky flavours enhance the taste of all that marinade. The portion is slightly pricey (QR225), but the quantity is abundant and perfect for two very hungry people. We end the meal with a kunafa that really surprises us with how good it tastes. And although the Moroccan tea is disappointingly light, the weather is perfect as we relax with it afterwards.

The service is impeccable and we’re inclined to think this place could be an underrated gem. The walk back to the boat is much-needed. En route, we’re already discussing a return trip.
