Interesting décor with average Middle Eastern fare Discuss this article

It’s nice to see a more casual Arabic restaurant in The Pearl-Qatar, and walking up we have high expectations from this quirky and cool Arabic diner. The décor is contemporary – blacks and whites with colourful lamps hanging from the ceiling – nothing particularly Arabesque, though.

The service is a bit clumsy and we’re already having some trouble explaining a dietary requirement. The menu is basic and limited, with moderately exciting twists to some classic Middle Eastern fare. We finally get around to going with the waiter’s recommendation.

Their signature hummus is interesting – it’s got a nice kick from the harissa blended in, a tinge of tanginess from the sumac and very mild sweetness from the pomegranate. The lentil soup isn’t the best, but the soujouk meatballs are great. The pan fried beef balls are marinated with Arabic spices and almost anything tastes good with melted mozzarella cheese on top.

The waiter recommends the lahm shareihat, but the beef slices are poor and tough, as is the dry chicken shawarma.

Given that the restaurant has recently been revamped, we’re surprised how average our experience is. Still, they do have those hummus varieties on the menu going for them, and they are worth a go if you’re passing.

The Bottom Line
Hit-and-miss food, but it’s in a funky set-up.
