From the very minute you set foot in this contemporary Japanese restaurant, you’re aware that this is going to be a luxurious experience and a meal to savour and remember.

A grand entrance, a warm and friendly greeting, and a short walk across the dining room and you’ll feel right at home. Simply gaze at the majestic views of the Marsa Malaz Kempinski and the sea and relax – the dining experience at Nozomi is the finest in the city.

The interiors are thoughtfully done – a beautiful light display right in the centre, large dark mirrored walls and columns, and floor-to-ceiling windows make the restaurant look exquisite.

The menu is vast, with several dishes that highlight the clean minimalism of Japanese cuisine and some that include touches of European flavours. If you can’t decide what to try from a menu filled with delicious-sounding creations then ask the staff.

Waiters know every little thing about the dishes and are excellent at judging what you’ll like. Go with their suggestions.

The spicy salmon and king crab roll arrives on a heavy marble slab. You’ll find avocado and tobiko in the roll, and the ingredients blend delightfully with the spicy salmon tartare. Everything is oh-so fresh, the rice is perfect and each roll has a mild kick, just how we like it. The kobe beef tacos are sublime. The shell, which is actually more of a bread, is crunchy yet soft, and the meat is doused in strong, oriental flavours. As well as the sweet and sour soy glaze, there are pickled onions and diced jalapenos.

All of the small, sharing plates taste so good you might wonder if the kitchen can keep it up. The answer to that is a resounding yes.

Nippon short ribs are presented simply, but they look fantastic, with star anise sitting either side of the slab of meat. It’s chargrilled, served on the bone and smothered in a spicy Japanese barbecue sauce. The meat falls off the bone. The takitomi-gohan is another hit. Rice is cooked in a clay pot, topped with sautéed beef and onions and cooked with truffle butter. Perfection.

Faultless service, exquisite food and a wonderful setting, every time. That’s what it takes to be Restaurant of the Year.
