There aren’t many restaurants that actually make you say “wow” when you step outside, but here we are in Zengo, standing next to the hostess, slightly embarrassed, looking out over Doha. The view, you see, is superb. From the 61st floor of the Kempinski you can see along West Bay towards Katara and The Pearl. The floor-to-ceiling windows make the most of the venue’s lofty perch but while there’s plenty to gawp at outside, Zengo has a lot going for it indoors, too.

The design is minimal and sleek. Dim but not dark, it’s atmospheric but stops short of being moody thanks to cute details such as the hanging bird cages and cute origami birds on each table. The attention to detail is on-point.
Staff, too, are excellent. There isn’t a missed beat when it comes to taking orders, delivering drinks and dishes and clearing things away.

Of course, the food has to be good, or all that good work will come unstuck. Happily, it is. In fact, it’s about as good as we’ve eaten in a long time.

We’re here at lunch, when there’s a cracking deal should you wish to go for it (QR95 for four courses) but this time we choose to pick off the à la carte menu.

The menu roams all over Asia, with a healthy chunk devoted to Japanese-style dishes. There are phrases such as “truffle ponzu” and “mango yolk” and “vanilla avocado” dotted around, making for an intriguing read.

Everything we have is superb. The tom yum soup is exactly as you’d want it. Coconut chicken is light, fragrant and satisfying, as is the pumpkin curry. The BBQ lamb ribs are almost addictive. New volcano rolls, with king crab and wasabi mayo, are excellent and great value. We could go on, but our word count is at a premium. You’ll just have to go and find out for yourself.

The bill (for two)

1x tom yum soup QR55
1x New Volcano rolls QR70
1x pumpkin curry QR65
1x chicken coconut QR135
1x BBQ lambs ribs QR135
Total (excluding service) QR460

The bottom line
A fantastic restaurant with super food.
