It’s refreshing to find an Indian restaurant that has shied away from the usual theme of reds, golds and loud prints. Gymkhana has a pure aesthetic of whites and creams interspersed with smart dark woods, while sepia photos of colonial India adorn the walls.

The menu is a well thought-out collection of classics. Everything will be fairly familiar to fans of a good curry: there’s chicken madras, goat gosht aloo, lamb rogan josh and Bengal shrimp, plus plenty of meat, seafood and paneer from the tandoor. We order the butter chicken (don’t judge us, you know you love it too), and it’s excellent; creamy and comforting, and perfect with the doughy, charred naans. But we are far more impressed by the fish tikka cooked in chickpea flour and mustard. The salmon is also a hit with the rich fish perfectly complementing the sharp mustard, and the kitchen gets our spice-level requests spot on.

The side of dal makhani is huge – big enough to constitute a main dish – and it’s lovely and creamy, but lacking the punchy waves of ginger, garlic and cumin that make this dish so enjoyable.

From the appetisers, we recommend the chaat with yoghurt and sharply sweet tamarind chutney – a perfect blend of flavours.

Round off the meal with a slice of syrupy gulab jamun cheesecake or masala tea crème brûlée, which is thick (perhaps too thick), indulgent and enough for two.

It’s been a while since any exciting restaurants opened in the souq, so Gymkhana is a welcome addition with great food at reasonable prices and in a nicely-designed setting. Bag the cosy corner table for comfy wicker chairs and views of Al Fanr. Perfect for a low-key evening out.
