Lebanese restaurants are a dime a dozen in Doha, so it takes something really special to stand out from the crowd. City Centre Rotana’s newest opening, Misk, is certainly on its way to making a name for itself in terms of food, even if it has a few minor kinks to work out in other areas.

On our visit, the staff are a bit over-eager and hover a little too much around our table (unnecessarily topping up water, prematurely clearing unfinished plates away, that kind of thing). But the place is new, so their enthusiasm and eagerness to please is difficult to fault.

That said, the atmosphere of the place does need some work. The restaurant is predominantly decked out in browns and beiges with elaborate light fixtures, coloured lamps and billowing brown-grey gossamer drapes hang over tables. It isn’t totally unpleasant, but the space is somehow big and empty while also feeling cluttered and dark. There’s an empty stage set up for live music but without any performers on it this contributes to a rather flat vibe. All that’s needed to give the place a lift is some crisp white linen, softer lighting and some brighter colours.

The food on the other hand needs no improvement. Almost everything we try is stunning and nicely presented, from the rich, tangy chicken liver cooked in pomegranate (sawda djej) and the perfectly crisp cheese rolls to the juicy, spicy kebab served with salad and spicy potatoes. The only minor letdown is the tabbouleh which needed more fresh tomato and far less lemon – though it’s still good enough that we demolish the whole thing.

Finish your meal with the halawet el jibn. A kind of deconstructed version of the popular Lebanese sweet cheese rolls, it comes topped with a lovely rose petal jam and plenty of pistachio.

The bottom line
Excellent, authentic Lebanese food in a laid-back setting that needs a bit of fine-tuning.
