Unassuming from the outside, but almost always buzzing inside, Yee Hwa is simple and unpretentious with few bells and whistles, but excellent food.

The menu is fairly long and covers Korean barbecue – including spare ribs, rib eye, brisket and marinated beef – and a variety of Korean specialities like bulgogi, beef and kimchi stir fry, rib soup and jap chae.

The barbecued meat is good quality, though it doesn’t come with any sides so it’s worth ordering one of the fiery kimchi pancakes which are big enough for at least three people.

Items not often found outside the Far East also appear in the Japanese section (like chawanmushi, a savoury egg custard, for example), while the list of sushi and sashimi is one of the longest we’ve come across. There must be at least 70 options, including deep-fried maki rolls. Whatever you choose, you can guarantee that it will be one of the most freshly prepared plates of sushi you’ll have in the city. And though raw fish may not sound like the best accompaniment to Korean noodles and beef, we say dive in and get it all. This is the kind of place where it’s all so good that anything goes.

The bottom line
Impressive, no-frills food from a menu of authentic Korean fare and a longer-than-most sushi list.
