Like us, many of you may fondly remember Richard Sandoval’s restaurant Pampano on The Pearl-Qatar, which is soon re-opening as a fresh concept called Isla. The modern take on Mexican cuisine to be found there was something quite new for Doha.

So, when we heard he was to open a second venue on the 61st floor of the Kempinski Residence & Suites – the tallest point in West Bay – we had high hopes. Happily, it doesn’t disappoint on our first visit to sample the bar bites.

Zengo is Sandoval’s Latin-Asian fusion restaurant from New York that’s become renowned around the world. In the region, he has a venue in Dubai. Here in Doha, the offshoot Z Lounge by Zengo has opened, with the restaurant soon to follow.

The venue itself is vast, with modern red and black interiors, over-sized, overly comfortable leather couches and booths, a huge bar and floor-to-ceiling windows boasting unparalleled views of the city and sea.

As for the food, it’s fascinating how well the flavours of South America and Asia go together.

The tuna tacos are a well-balanced representation of that. The fresh tuna tartar is combined with al dente sushi rice, then mixed with a creamy guacamole and a tart yet sweet mango salsita.

We’re just as enamoured by the chicken empanadas, which are texturally perfect, and stuffed with a rich curry sauce and more of that moreish mango salsa.

Our rainbow rolls are beautifully presented and the standard of ingredients is just as high – hamachi tuna, scallops, salmon, more mango and a citrusy yuzu sauce completes each roll.

Another favourite has to be the vegetable bao. These small, steamed parcels are packed full of flavour with a hint of citrus, a kick from spice and a balancing sweetness.

We enjoy small plate after small plate, comfortably overlooking the city from our high vantage point.

Now, we can’t wait to find out what else Sandoval has up his chef’s white sleeve.
