The spirit of the Ottoman Empire is alive and strong in Qatar at Sukar Pasha.

Opulent interiors, featuring plush couches, over-sized chandeliers and hand-painted ceilings, merge the Turkish heritage with contemporary Qatari tastes.

Meanwhile, an expansive outdoor terrace provides comfortable seating and stunning views over West Bay from your beachside vantage point in the heart of Katara Cultural Village. And with a new extension being built, this already-vast restaurant is set to give all other Turkish restaurants in Doha a run for their money.

There is much to be said for the traditional food, which for years has proven to be rich and complex in flavour, not to mention perfectly authentic thanks to the Turkish chefs. These are recipes that were first conceived in the kitchens of the Imperial Palace back in the 16th century.

We visit one cool evening and take a seat on the terrace as a cook stands by char-grilling cuts on a barbecue. The meaty aromas linger in the air and inspire us to over-order from the menu. This isn’t hard as, even if you choose just three or four sharing dishes, the portions are so gigantic that even the most dedicated eater will likely be leaving with a doggy bag.

After some discussion with our server, who happily advises us on which dishes to try, and a fairly lengthy wait considering the restaurant is hardly busy, we end up with a giant pot of the saksuka – lightly fried cubes of aubergine, potato and bell pepper topped with a deep and flavourful tomato sauce. Paired with the freshly made, piping hot, soft and squidgy bread and scooped with a creamy, perfectly text book variation of hummus, this quickly soars to the top of our favourite Turkish dishes to try.

Next, we dive into some char-grilled chunks of lamb which are juicy, extremely tender and beautifully flavoured. However, the star of this dinner show has to be the spinach pide that’s topped with crumbling, slightly melting cheese and earthy spinach that is in no way bitter to taste. The bread is warm, delicious and fresh, and when topped with some more of the hummus it’s a dish that’s likely to cause some serious future cravings, ensuring our return to this impressive restaurant.
