‘Mirror mirror on the wall, which is the busiest restaurant in Doha of them all?’ ‘P.F. Chang’s you idiot.’ That’s how we like to think the conversation would go if Snow White and clan lived in Doha.

Always packed, always bustling, always dependable, P. F. Chang’s came to the city in May and, it’s fair to say, shot out the blocks.

Founded by Philip Chiang and Paul Fleming in 1993 in Arizona, there are now hundreds of chains all over the globe, testament to the brand’s popularity.

On about our seventh visit we decide it’s time to do a review, and one thing is consistent – a waiting time. Located at Villaggio Mall, it’s no bother – it allows us to do a little retail therapy and is proof positive the place is proudly and predictably packed with awesomeness.

Five-star hotels constantly talk of the need to get ready, how it takes a couple of months for everything to click, from the menu to the staff, yet P. F. Chang’s seems to have hit the spot since day one. Funny that.

So we do our shopping, come back and are seated in the very heart of the restaurant.

The spicy edamame (young soy beans) is the don – we can’t snack on them enough, the chicken dumplings, hand made and drizzled with chilli oil, are not too stodgy and full of flavour. We wash this down with the hot and sour soup, noting the variance of mushrooms, accompanied with chicken, tofu and bamboo shoots.

We decide we have to order a P. F. Changs favourite, known as the Dynamite Shrimp. Creamy, crunchy and delectably unhealthy tasting, we cannot get enough of the battered shrimps, though we wish it has more of a kick as the menu states it will have an “explosively spicy sauce.”

It’s a good job that we can take the food away. We demolish all of these dishes then come unstuck when the next two come around – the wok charred beef and red chilli buttery shrimp. We have two mouthfuls each and realise we’re stuffed. Both are excellent – the caramelised beef is tender and works excellently with the mushrooms, and the buttery shrimp with egg noodles is packed with flavour, complemented by onions and garlic to make a dish that packs a punch.

We look at desserts, deciding which one to take away. There’s only one that tickles our fancy – one sticks out as a champion among the dessert category – the choco buchi. Rice dough with a Nutella centre and a coating of sesame seeds, fried and drizzled in chocolate sauce. Sounds divine. Tastes… no idea, it wasn’t available. Gluttonous and stuffed, we decline another option.

P. F. Changs is an institution. If you haven’t been yet, you’re missing out.
