Delightful decadence and plenty of chocolate at breakfast time Discuss this article

Let’s get straight to the point. The Angelina hot chocolate is other-worldly. You could slowly sip it, allowing the lustrous nectar to envelop and coax you into a state of bliss. Three different cocoas from Africa are blended into a ganache-like syrup that’s so silky and slow-moving you could savour it with a spoon. This, incidentally, is how we polish off the pouring jug it’s served in – not one drop would go to waste.

The Parisian tearoom, which has been serving fine pastries for more than a century to patrons in France, finally opened in Doha following a string of outlets across the Asia Pacific and the Gulf. The café of choice for the likes of Coco Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld has two signature items, one described above with shameless enthusiasm and another called the Mont Blanc.

This meringue bomb studded with cream and topped with chestnut puree sits in the same echelons of dessert blockbusters such as the Magnolia Bakery cupcake and double-decker Ladurée macarons. Regrettably, the Mont Blanc is unavailable on the day we visit. We are told the lovelies come directly from Paris, and massive demand means they keep running out.

The disappointment is crushing, but we cannot let this ruin our overall food memory. Because there are other worthy mentions, chief among them a brioche pain perdu. The French toast emerges crusty and golden on the outside, creamy and fluffy on the inside. Caramel sauce is swirled over the top, a finishing touch to an already decadent dish.

The hot chocolate and pain perdu alone would be a complete meal, but our breakfast and brunch specials also come with Viennoiserie and eggs. The former does not excite as much as the latter – the croissants are a touch overdone in the oven, receding into the shadow of the perfectly cooked Angelina omelette with mushrooms, tomato concasse and cheese.

Still in a teething stage, the café lacks the flair of service efficiency. Most tables are filled even on a weekday morning, and this evidently overwhelms the staff. Our server has problems describing particular dishes but is so warm and friendly that we overlook the shortcomings, even when our food arrives out of order.

The location of Angelina is slightly quizzical. It’s semi-attached to a department store but has windows looking out onto the main thoroughfare of the shopping mall. Perhaps a stroke of good luck or genius design, the area is covered by a glass roof and so receives plenty of natural light.

In a way, it’s a simulated al fresco setting with the comfort of air conditioning – an ideal spot to sit back and nurse a pleasure-inducing cup of hot chocolate.
