Living in a city that thrives on air-conditioning, one misses certain rituals such as taking tea in the garden. There’s something to be said about spending the afternoon surrounded by the rejuvenating lushness of greenery.

While it’s not exactly the real thing, a new spot in town offers a compromise – a plenitude of flora and sunshine combined with the comfort of A/C. Welcome to the Torch Tea Garden – an indoor garden located on the 21st floor of the hotel.

The entire space takes its cue from the verdant canopy ahead. Artificial plants tastefully cascade from the ceiling, simulating a forest of sorts.

Plants dot the slate walls, adding life to a room already blazing with colour from the cushions of lemon, tangerine and fuchsia.

As we settle into our window table, we also take note of the many seating options of high armchairs, low stools, long couches and single recliners – all designed in the style of patio furniture.

The décor is bright, modern, comfortable, and we are enthusiastic.

We arrive the moment the doors open at 3pm, ravenous for afternoon tea. The server tells us that service doesn’t officially start till 4pm, but it would be their pleasure to offer it anyway. Talk about major service brownie points.

Perusing the afternoon tea menu, we are thoroughly pleased by the expanded selection of teas from the hotel’s previous location. We are seduced by a spring blooming tea from Fujian, China which tastes as delightful as it sounds: jasmine flowers bloom out of a cluster of silver needle white tea leaves, marigold and amaranth.

We also like the avant garde presentation of sandwiches and sweets. Instead of the traditional tiered stand, the food here comes on a slate, deftly arranged.

The serving size is petite, and we devour everything in less than ten minutes. Between the curried chicken in a waffle shell and avocado salad, we are in heaven. When asked if there is anything from that selection we’d like more of, complimentary, we say everything. And they gladly oblige. We frankly can’t get over how good the service is.

But then we taste the scones and, being somewhat traditionalistic when it comes to this wholesome British favourite, our enthusiasm deflates. To be fair, the menu calls them sweet breads, and that’s indeed their consistency: airy and fluffy, they are presented like scones but are very much a soft bun.

Still, as we watch the sun go down while nursing our bottomless tea, we are perfectly content – just lounging away in this garden among the clouds.
