Casper & Gambini’s is a cafe-restaurant concept from Beirut, Lebanon with outlets across the region. At first I was a bit sceptical, thinking it will be similar to any other mall-based eatery – with only heavy meals and junk food. But I was wrong.

We visit the venue one busy lunchtime to find a modern venue with a menu full of options that are reasonably priced. There are sandwiches, burgers, pastas, pizzas, salads and a large range of ‘lite’ options. They’ve also just launched a new sushi menu that offers platters with a variety of rolls. There are tasty sounding desserts, drinks and a great selection of teas that the waiter will display for you on request.

Starving and salivating, we order immediately. I order the vegetarian special from the ‘lite’ sandwich menu and an ‘Uramaki 6’ with six sushi rolls of three varieties. My dining companion goes for the Casper cheese steak with fries.

The servers are attentive, checking back on us when appropriate – something you don’t see much in a regular mall cafe/restaurant. They bring us a bread basket with herbed break steaks, peppered crackers and warm, soft, fluffy grain bread which are all delicious.

The sushi comes out first. It’s delicious and I’m really impressed, as something of a sushi connoisseur. Each variation is full of flavour, really fresh, and has a slight spicy kick.

My sandwich, which is roasted mashed potato, sundried tomato and olives with thyme and olive oil on a brown baguette is interesting yet very tasty. It comes with a basic side salad which is also refreshing.

Meanwhile, my friend’s cheese steak is equally impressive. The beef is cooked perfectly with plenty of cheese, and a sprinkling of onions and mushrooms. And the fries are lovely and fluffy. Overall, it feels more wholesome than junky.

We finish with a chocolate fondant to share. Its comes with a vanilla bean ice cream and the melted chocolate simply oozes out of its moist, fluffy casing and on to the plate. It’s easy to see why this is their bestselling dessert.
