As with any venue at the W, the décor is stylish and the ambience is buzzing. Everything from the crockery to the art works to the flower pots in the middle of each table screams chic. Plus, the service is friendly and attentive with each waiter offering recommendations for drinks and food.

The lunch express menu, embedded amid the full menu, offers classic Italian and signature Papermoon dishes. I go for the salmon tartar with avocado and cucumber, pizza ortolana and pineapple carpaccio with sorbet. My friend picks the baby spinach salad, pappardelle with smoked beef and cream sauce, and the classic tiramisu.

While we wait, we try the toasted bread that’s doused in olive oil and salt, which certainly whets our appetite.

Out come the starters and we’re very impressed with the spinach salad with goats’ cheese, sundried tomatoes, thinly sliced raw mushrooms and caramelised walnuts, plus a light coating of balsamic reduction. It’s light and perfect for lunch. The salmon tartar, while not exactly bursting with flavour, is very light and refreshing. A good daytime option.

Once we’re done, our plates are promptly cleared, and mains follow shortly afterwards looking beautiful. My pizza, with big slices of vegetables atop, is huge for a lunch portion but is thin and light, which makes up for it. It is lacking seasoning and could do with being a little crunchier, but all in all it’s a good meal that surprisingly doesn’t leave me wanting to sleep afterwards. The pappardelle dish, on the other hand, is perfect as it is. The fresh pasta is bouncy, the sauce has a great balance and the smoked beef adds the right amount of saltiness to the dish.

Finally, we move on to dessert. By this point we’ve seen plenty being brought out to other tables and they look fabulous. My pineapple carpaccio is a wonderful way to end the meal – the sorbet is refreshing, and a subtle hint of star anise on the fruit works well to add that extra flavour oomph.

Unfortunately, my companion (who knows his desserts) is disappointed by the tiramisu as he has far too much cream and far too little ladyfinger. It is the only low point for him though and he’s dying to go back to try the ridiculously tasty looking millefoglie.
The lunch menu is available Sat-Thu, noon-3pm. W Doha, West Bay (4453 5353).
