I feel like I should be typing this while wearing some sort of ridiculous ensemble a la Carrie Bradshaw. The SITC girls loved them some Magnolia Bakery, and I can see why. I can’t be trusted in Magnolia. First, a case of cupcakes, then the case of other desserts including cheesecakes and mini pies, then the row upon row of cake plates filled with every kind of cake imaginable. Sugar overlaod, but we’re not done. Keep walking and you’ll hit Cookie Land before being slammed by Ice Box Cake Ville. And it’s all wafting The Best Smells Ever. I cannot handle all this dessert. I need a moment.

Once I’ve stopped shaking in excitement (and let’s be honest, pre-emptive sugar high; my body knows what is to come) we dig in. My life would be a lot different if I didn’t get to eat cakes and call it work, thus enabling me to order two desserts at once with limited shame.

I try the pumpkin cheese cake and the chocolate pudding pie, while my friend digs into the chocolate cheese cake and a slice of coconut cake.

When the cake arrives it’s a doorstop of a slab, a behemoth draped in meringue and sprinkled with coconut. Clearly this is the way to go if you’re on a budget: the cakes come in many of the same flavours as the cupcakes, but the portion is the size of your head.

It’s dense and old fashioned and something like what grandma would have made if you were lucky enough to be the spawn of Betty Crocker.

The cheesecakes equally measure up; not the mammoth slice lurking in the corner like the coconut cake, they’re light and fluffy, rich without being too sticky.

Mine particularly tastes like pumpkin pie, while my friend’s is like a rich creamy chocolate mousse. And then, there’s the pudding pie.

We’re pretty sure this is what dances in Bill Cosby’s head when he dreams. It’s a sweet pie crust, topped with a dollop of American-style chocolate pudding and whipped cream. Done.

Easy and simple and I’m restraining myself from launching myself at the dessert case to gobble them up in a horrifying, cookie-monster display of gluttony.

As we’re leaving though we’re seduced by those wanton sugary harlots, the cupcakes. We both get a few to take home. Let me just say this: they did not make it out of the car and actually into my house. The vanilla with chocolate butter cream particularly ended up as a smear of sugary happiness tinged with regret and just a few crumbs crammed down the seat of my car.

Like I said, I cannot be trusted in Magnolia Bakery.
