Sugar & Spice

Dessert for dinner? We give our sweet tooth a treat in Lagoona Mall Reviews

Sugar and Spice is not messing around. Their menu is 90 per cent desserts with a scattered few salads and sandwiches to placate our inner mother’s demanding we not have cookies for dinner. But what’s that? Not just cookies, but homemade chunks of chocolate chip cookies, slabs of freshly baked brownie, and then you’re going to top it with ice cream and chocolate syrup? Our dieticians and our moms would not approve.
When we went we did start our sugary extravaganza with a sandwich and salad—my friend’s Caesar salad weirdly is topped with taco chips (I’m confused: did the salad take a little spring break trip to Mexico en route to our table?), but my sandwich is lovely. Turkey and cheese on nice crusty bread, served with salad and potato chips: it’s not fussy, it’s not pretending to be anything more exciting than it is, and topped with a spicy mayo it’s got just a tiny amount of zing. Ole.

But we’re not here for the mains: we’re not even really here for the funky atmosphere. The chairs are mismatched and quirky, the servers wear 50s style purple uniforms with Chuck Taylor sneakers, and the entire play just screams ‘hipsters decorated this but that’s ok because it’s still sort of lovely’. We’re here for the sweets. And at Sugar and Spice, leave your diet at the door: we order not one, not two, but three desserts. The aforementioned sundae for me, and the warm chocolate cake for my friend. And then just for gluttony giggles, we go for the chocolate fondue. Let’s just be clear: three kinds of melted chocolate (dark, milk and white) that we can dip cookies, marshmallows, and ice cream balls into? We’re going to ignore the fruit that comes with it as being too nutritious and eat enough sugar our back teeth ache. Fruit dipped in chocolate is like cookies made with raisins instead of chocolate chips: the root of most people’s trust issues. You know what you’ll be like? “I’m totally going to order that cake. No, the cake with ice cream. And whipping cream. And chocolate sauce. And then it’s totally normal if I order a giant platter of chunks of basically everything in your dessert case that I will then dip into yet more chocolate and shove in my mouth because, after all, I already ate this tiny piece of lettuce and there’s dairy in ice cream right? Balanced meal.”

So basically, Sugar and Spice is a house of shame and you will totally humiliate yourself diving headfirst into a bowl of cookies, emerging chocolate-smeared and shamefaced into the harsh light of day (or the mall). You should totally go.
