Sushi Minto

A little on the expensive side, but there’s no denying that this new sushi restaurant delivers Reviews

Big, airy, with high ceilings and funky, white ‘Swiss cheese’ walls, Sushi Minto is as Derek Zoolander would say, a ridiculously good looking restaurant. But after making fools of ourselves banging around outside trying to find the right entrance, all we wanted to do was slink inside and hide our faces behind the menu.

Things perked up when we spotted another man banging around trying to find the door, but by then we had spotted the price list. Sushi always seems to be at the upper end of the spectrum, but QR25 for a miso soup? It seemed outrageously steep.

Our animated waitress took our order from the sushi menu (there would be no food acrobatics this visit, as the teppanyaki stations upstairs weren’t finished yet), and our pricing woes vanished as soon as we spotted the epically filled bowl of shrimp salad, packed with juicy seafood and leafy green salad leaves. The tuna and the squid sashimi were excellent quality, the ballston futo maki, packed with tempura shrimp, egg and avocado was outstanding, but the spicy tuna temaki (served in a cute stand and a cheapie at only QR15) was a little flavourless.

Despite grumbling about the price, we had to admit; the miso soup was delicious, with the perfect amount of tofu and seaweed to scoop up in between aromatic mouthfuls of broth. We finished the meal with a pot of Japanese green tea and left agreeing we would return, though we might check out Sushi Minto’s Twitter site before we go back to save some riyals, as they usually post some pretty good discounts online.

i love this restaurant! the sushi selection is always fresh. if you're into weird sushi like salmon skin rolls (which is very rare to find in other sushi place except oishi sushi which has very small portion) you should definitely check out sushi minto! i crave it every other week!
