As Doha heads towards a phase of taco takeovers with lots of Mexican restaurants opening (including one by Richard Sandoval that we’re really looking forward to – watch this space). Salsa has had a much-needed menu facelift. We love everything in this restaurant. The décor is unbeatable in Doha and they even have a live mariachi band, something you won’t find anywhere else in town. It’s a welcoming little slice of Mexico, with log cabin booths, embroidered Mexican hats and colourful stained glass windows, Salsa is a top spot for a fun night out on the town.

When we heard chef Efrain Flores was flying down to Doha all the way from the W Mexico to switch up Salsa’s menu, we were mostly expecting a few avocados and habanero chillies thrown around. The result? Exactly that – some of the best guacamole we’ve had in a while, with habanero indeed, and a fun new menu with lots of character.

You’ll find bags of choice, big flavours and bold colours in the new menu with dishes like tuna tostadas, tostadas de salpicon (traditional shredded beef) and short ribs en mole verde. The dessert menu still retains the classic churros, but the absolute standout item, and our unrivalled dish of the month, is the chocolate chilli cake.

An incredibly moist cake is baked from dense espresso, chillies and chocolate. The heat is very subtle and while no flavour really overpowers any other, you get a mild and very enjoyable after-taste from the habanero chillies. The warm cake is served with a scoop of cinnamon ice-cream and together, we assure you, it is the most magical dessert combination. And the best part? The whole dessert is gluten free.
