When it comes to fine Chinese dining, Doha isn’t overwhelmed with options. Vibrant flavours and casual atmospheres are easy to find – creativity and that elusive cool-but-refined vibe, on the other hand, are much harder to track down.

Enter Shanghai Club. One of those trendy all-encompassing evening experiences that rolls restaurant and lounge bar into one. Both its food and setting are rooted in tradition – it celebrates authenticity with simple, understated dishes, but modern flavour combinations and impressive execution mean a meal here never strays into seen-it-before boredom.

Inspired by traditional Chinese cuisine, these twice-cooked barbecued beef short ribs are simmered for an hour in infused water made with star anise, cinnamon, Chinese black beans and red rice. Once marinated, the meat is smothered in honey and browned in an oven, giving it that sticky, caramelised quality that makes barbecued ribs so mouthwateringly moreish. Cucumber salad freshens up an otherwise rich and heavy dish, resulting in a plate that’s meaty and hearty, but well-balanced and elegant.

Clearly aiming to attract a fashionable crowd, a meal here is about far more than just dinner. This is the kind of place to put aside a whole night for (and some extra room for dessert).
