Full on business
They’ve won our Best Business Lunch award for two years running for good reason. Their daily business lunch is so popular it’s one of the few in the city you have to book well in advance—otherwise you’ll be without a table. Packed with lunch sized versions of their delectable dinner menu, the gangs all here—from the great salmon to that tomato soup poured right at the table. Plus, at QR89, it’s affordable enough for a regular weekday stop. And with an atmosphere that’s lively yet sophisticated, you can head there with clients or coworkers, or even just on your own. And if you absolutely must have a paper bag at your desk, may we recommend their cookie bag for dessert?
Try: Market by Jean Georges, W Doha Hotel & Residences (4453 5353)
They call it the Rushed for Time business lunch, and they actually mean it! They lured us in with promises of having us in and out, stuffed with three courses in under an hour, and then they actually delivered. You’ve barely sat down and they’re coming around for your drinks order, brandishing their bread basket (do not skip their brioche. We are still waiting for the chef to get back to us on exactly what kind of bribe is required to get that recipe). The menu isn’t vast, but it’s constantly changing and there’s always a range of options for each course, all of which appear at your table as if the staff were very efficient robots. But we really love their inclusion, and highlighting, of healthy choices. There’s always a healthy starter, main and dessert on the menu that’s a little more than lettuce and a tiny morsel of chicken. This means you can go to lunch with your coworkers and not break your diet, and even have dessert—Aroma, we salute you for offering a fruit salad topped with a scoop of sorbet.
Try: Aroma, Kempinski Residences & Suites (4405 3333)
Asian Lunch Box
Lunch boxes aren’t all bad, particularly if they come packed with sushi and Japanese flavours. There are those in Doha who swear this is the be all and end all of sushi spots. One of the only ones in town to deliver, they offer decadent yet reasonably priced (for sushi) bento boxes, with soup, salad, main course and sushi offerings, perfect for lunch. You can have it delivered to your office, or you can brave mid day traffic on Salwa Rd to eat in—their delivery is actually fairly speedy, and their staff knows their stuff when it comes to taking orders. Plus, they’ve also got fantastic homemade iced tea, perfect if you overdose on wasabi.
Try: Sushi Minto, Salwa Rd (4467 5577)
A new kind of sandwich
We admit it, most days we do just want a sandwich at lunch. But, if you’re craving something a little different, head to this popular café to grab a bagel with practically anything you can imagine on top. From their variety of bagel flavours topped with cream cheese, to bagel sandwiches and pizzas, they’ve got it all—and they even deliver, although their radius is limited. Service is quick too, and they don’t mind if you linger. Grab a quick bite with just a bagel or go for the full meal, with one of their sides—we particularly love the potato salad. They also offer coffee, and have a selection of cold beverages, but they seem to run out of ice regularly, taking most of their menu off line: go for the bagels, skip the drink.
Try: Bread & Bagels, Beach Tower (4411 0041)
Pop in for the free wifi and lunch, or takeaway one of their healthy lunch boxes for QR60. Their chef makes the bread in house daily, meaning the place almost always smells absolutely fantastic. The lunch box contains a salad, sandwich, dessert, chips and a drink, meaning you can make it as healthy or indulgent as you want. Their sandwiches are hearty and filling, and we’ve yet to have one where the tomato wasn’t so fresh it tasted like it’d just come off the vine. Service is pretty fast as well, so whether you take your work with you (did we mention the free wifi?) or just grab it to go, it’s a safe bet.
Try: Quick Bites, West End at the Renaissance Doha (4419 6100)
