Don’t be put off by the difficulty of reaching this Palestinian bakery.Trust us, it’s more than worth it, they make some of the best kunafa in town, and then some.

Don’t expect anything fancy. The shop itself is simple and basic, just a few calligraphy-engraved brass plates and old photos of Palestine line the walls. There are several branches, but it’s worth battling the traffic of Salwa Road to visit the original, biggest and best, in West Corner Centre. The Arabic sweets and pastries that line the countertop on huge round plates are really something special.

You’ll find at least five (at an absolute minimum) kinds of baklava, including elaborate bird’s nest baklava topped with nuts and green pistachio varities. Al Aker’s shining star, though, is its kunafa. The clear bestseller, it disappears far quicker than anything else, and the numerous kinds come topped with different combinations of nuts and syrup. It’s also worth picking up some aish al saraya, a coconutty set egg custard on a buttery pastry base.

You can buy in kilo and half-kilo plates, which you can mix and match. The menu is exclusively Arabic, but staff will happily let you sample less familier pastries.

Finish your visit with a cup of thick, strong Arabic coffee. It will go down perfectly with your half kilo of sugar.
