Top of the pops

We love live music and that’s no secret. Here are our favourite spots to catch some tunes Discuss this article

Admiral’s
We’ve seen quite a few bands play here (some worth skipping). But if it can sometimes be a little hit and miss, it’s still worth a visit.Admiral’s has an enviable location and views, and it does some decent pub grub. A massive bowl of reasonably priced nachos makes Summer of ’69 again much more bearable.
Free entry. Open Sun-Wed 5pm-midnight; Thu 5pm-1am; Fri noon-1am. The Ritz-Carlton Doha, West Bay Lagoon (4484 8000).

Irish Harp
This Irish pub almost takes you right there, if you disregard the crowd. The ambience is great on a weekend and you’ll hear fantastic covers of classic rock hits through the decades. Did we mention they have one of the best burgers in town?
QR100 (one-time registration followed by free entry). Open daily 5pm-2am. Sheraton Grand Doha Resort and Convention Hotel, West Bay (4485 4444).

Paloma
They’ve just brought in a new resident band called Dynamix and we are happy to confirm they really are pretty, well, dynamic. They are loud, talented and play an excellent selection that goes all the way back to the ’50s. Turn it into a party for all your senses with the place’s delectable selection of Tex-Mex bites.
Free entry. Open daily 5pm-2am. Intercontinental Doha, West Bay Lagoon (4484 4919).

Qube
Radisson Blu’s nightlife spot has been popular for many years now, and why wouldn’t it be? The band here is really entertaining (a group of talented Filipino artists who sing Indian and Arabic songs, too, sometimes) and the place has a loyal following. This month will see fun acts live at Qube – a Spice Girls tribute band and Red Hot Chilli Pipers (almost had you there, didn’t we?). We’re pretty excited to see the bagpipe rockers perform live, as well.
QR200 (including one house beverage), QR350 (unlimited beverages). Friday November 10, 7pm-8.30pm. Radisson Blu Hotel Doha (4428 1555).

The Club at the St. Regis
There’s something magnetic about the atmosphere here; it really pulls us back every single time. It’s got cosy scarlet couches and close proximity to a stage that hosts some of the best musical talent in Doha. You’ll never have a dull night out here because they regularly change bands and every time we think, “This can’t get better,” it does.
Free entry. Open Tue-Sat 7pm-late. St. Regis Doha, West Bay Lagoon (4446 0000).

Trader Vic’s
They are live and they are Cuban (the band, of course). Your salsa partner’s hand in one hand and an exotic beverage in the other sounds exactly like what we want our weekend to look like. This Polynesian-themed resto-bar does a few tasty bites and plenty of good live music to boot.
Free entry. Open Sun-Thu 4pm-2am, Fri-Sat 12.30pm-2am. Hilton Hotel, West Bay (4423 3118).

Vagabond
The erstwhile Rose & Thistle bar has been renovated and is now Vagabond. They’ve brought back the darts board, which we are excited about, and a few new bands to grace the brand-new venue. We wish it had a bigger dancefloor, though, because headbanging is important, clearly!
QR30 (for gents on weekends, free for ladies). Open daily 3pm-1am. Horizon Manor Hotel, Al Souq (5533 5451).
