London-born, Doha-based DJ Kinky D shares her views on Qatar’s nightlife scene.

I hadn’t been to Rocca at the Grand Hyatt for a while, as it was out of commission for a couple of months last year and so were the parties they normally hold. This was due to an extensive update to its structure. So when it reopened with an increased square footage and a brand new Urban night by Xtremer Entertainment run by Moufdi, I was eager to find out more.

I had heard big things about this particular promotional outfit – that they’ve put on events in Dubai and their DJs Rage and Teddy Jam had played at concerts featuring Rick Ross and also with Mimms (‘This Is Why I’m Hot’). They were also responsible for bringing DJ Whoo Kid (a 50 CENT official DJ) to Doha last August. So on hearing that they were putting on a night with Funky House, Commercial House, R&B, UK Garage, Hip Hop and Dancehall, I was keen to see the new venue.

I was also ready to hear some UK Garage especially as this was one of the genres that helped me move into the DJ scene and what I love to dance to.

I arrived around 11.30pm and while waiting to get in I could hear Commercial House playing. Inside, the venue was half full. It now has an outdoor area with glass walls and doors that slide open, covered by a canvas canopy. With Rattan furniture and an extra bar outside, there’s now indoor and outdoor seating overlooking the sea that backs onto the hotel.

The crowd was a mix of people ready for a good night out. Sports wear B Boys breaking, popping and locking, alongside a designer dressed crowd meant that anything goes.

Placed either side of the newly installed decks, a couple of matching dressed (black sporty outfits complete with gold chains) young ladies danced.

This is an intimate venue where two Technics 1210 turntables have been set up so you can actually see the DJs and watch them do their thing. That’s exactly what DJ Rage and DJ Teddy Jam did. Cutting and scratching their way through a range of Hip Hop, R&B and Commercial House, I felt like I was in a whirlwind.

The place was filling up and by 1am was pretty packed. People were getting down to the music, sitting on private tables and there was a bustling bar.

Although I didn’t hear any UK Garage in the end, you can expect an enthusiastic crowd who know their Dr Dres from their Drakes and who will sing along and dance right through until the end of the night.

All in all this is a Thursday night to check out, especially if you don’t want to be in a big club but want to hear an urban flava!
