We’ve been hearing plenty of good reports about this lady lately so we find out what makes a night with her at the decks so special.

How did you discover your love of and talent for DJ-ing?
Music has been my first love since I was a child. It has always been with me, growing up watching Top Of The Pops, Soul Train and listening to the radio and other family members’ tastes in music.

It’s been there through good and bad times in my life. It responded however I wanted it to depending on my mood and what mood I wanted to be in, so I suppose I was DJ-ing at a very young age.

Buying a set of turntables and mixer came later with me eventually playing at friends’ parties and then onto promoting my own club nights at various clubs and venues in London, UK. This helped me to discover that I had a talent for moving people on a dance floor which in turn then led to me getting gigs from promoters and events organisers based around the world.

How would you describe your own DJ-ing style?
My style is party! It’s very eclectic and suited to the evening that’s being promoted. I have a true love of music and therefore think a good track can come from many genres be it soul, Afrobeats, R & B, disco, hip hop, funky/soulful house, which are just some of the styles I play. You can check out my mixes at www.mixcloud.com/Kinkyd to get a taste of what I am about.

What is your top secret to a successful gig?
A successful gig is a combination of the right people, aesthetics and of course... great music!!

You seem to DJ at all the best events and venues in the city at the moment. Where exactly can people find you behind the decks?
My weekly Friday residency is at The Late Brunch at the Doha Marriott hotel. It starts at 6pm and I do a four hour set encompassing many musical genres from the last 50 years! I start out with chilled soul/lounge music while people eat and drink. I move the tempo up and change music styles as the evening progresses and make people want to dance. I also DJ at many one-off events and gigs [around the city] so if you want to keep abreast of what I am up to on a regular basis ‘like’ my fan page ‘Kinky D’ on Facebook.

What brought you to Doha?
My first contract was with W Hotel courtesy of my connection with Coco Latté boss Nicholas Chrisotomou. The fantastic response to my music on my subsequent visits allowed me to build a fan base and make friends. I have never lived outside of London before but having mates here is helping the transition develop very nicely.

What are your thoughts on the nightlife scene here?
The clubs here tend to play the same music. It seems to be very commercial orientated. EDM (Electronic Dance Music) is being played everywhere and I am not a fan – it has no soul and it doesn’t move me. I think there is a demand to have more specialised/themed nights, which is one of the reasons I came to Doha.

What’s the best gig you ever had?
I have travelled the world and been fortunate to meet and work with many great artists in the world of music. I’ve been involved in some fabulous events and venues like the Royal Opera House and at The Cannes Film Festival. I’ve presented my own radio show Xcess With Kinky D on BBC Radio 1 and BBC 1Xtra (in the UK). I also had a few opportunities to be the music director and resident DJ for the Abu Dhabi Film Festival and held many club residencies including five years at Fabric and The End (nightclubs in London). Performed with The Supremes, The Temptations, 50 Cent, Goldfrapp, Kelis, Plan B, Courtney Pine – you get the idea. So if I am honest the best gig I ever had, would be... my career!

And your worst?
The worst gig is always the one you never do, the one you get booked for and then it gets cancelled at short notice.

What’s your life motto?
Karma! What goes around comes around. Life is so short, I am trying to maximise the amount of experiences I can fit into it by being positive and open to life.
