If you’re sick of the usual round of office parties and leaving brunches, try this on for your next big group bonding session. The W Doha holds special classes in the fine art of cocktail making and sushi rolling, specifically created for private groups. With a minimum of eight people required, their mixologist will teach you how to make two cocktails—and even help you choose which you want your group to make. Or, if raw fish is more your style, their sushi chefs shares most of his secrets (he’s got to retain some mystery after all), again with specially tailored rolls. The sushi class includes mocktails and lessons in three different rolls, held in Market by Jean-Georges, which the cocktail classes include munchies and two handpicked cocktails, held in Crystal VIP room. Both run for QR180 a person.
Slingbacks & Kickbacks Cocktail School and Sushi School, QR180 per person, minimum eight people, W Doha. Call 4453 5135 or email BnFreservations.email@example.com.
Big Day Out
The Ritz-Carlton thinks we all should spend more time outside, particularly in the Lagoon Gardens and if it involves all things hops. Running every Saturday from 1pm-6.30pm until May, their recently launched Big Day Out includes a traditional Bedouin tend lined with drinking stalls and a barbecue with selections from around the world, including Australia. They’re basically building a summer fair for the next few months in their back garden, complete with cookout, MC, DJ and live local bands. But it wouldn’t be a summer fair without some ridiculous join-in fun, so hop on the mechanical bull, or waddle into the sumo arena (dressed in a giant plush sumo wrestler costume), wiggle with some limbo or even race a turtle. And, just to make sure you got the message about the hops, they’ve even set up pong competitions, with fierce-ping pong-ball into cup throwing action. Must be strictly over 21, so all the childish fun is there for the adults!
Ritz-Carlton Big Day Out, every Saturday 1pm-6.30pm, Lagoon Gardens. Strictly over 21. Entrance is free, food and beverage a la carte. Call 4484 8000.
Around the world in a glass
The drinks maestros at Dunes have laid down a hefty challenge this month: they will prepare special drinks inspired by any country in the world. They say they’ve got the Caribbean, Italy, Australia and the like. We say we want them to make us a drink that epitomizes Antarctica (and yes we know it’s actually a continent, that’s part of the challenge). Plus there’s live entertainment straight from Las Vegas: Avis Ellis and KC bring the jazz tunes from 8pm Monday through Saturday while the bartenders show off their geography skills. Head over and stump them!
Fly with Dunes, Grand Hyatt Doha. Monday through Saturday, 8pm onwards.
