Low riders
We test the friendship of Qube’s DJ Legacy and Josey Kray, back this month with another Yo! Get Low night Discuss this article

For those who may not be familiar, what is Yo! Get Low?
DJ Legacy: Yo! Get Low is a 110 per cent dedicated R ’n’ B, hiphop and ragga night, and everything associated with black music. People should expect a crazy atmosphere, funky party people and plenty of chaos. There is no other night in Qatar that can compare, and that’s why it’s the biggest hiphop party in the country as well as the Middle East.
Do you get to see people going crazy on the dancefloor?
Josey: Crazy is an understatement. At a lot of bars and clubs in Qatar, people are too scared to let themselves go. At Yo! Get Low, the clubbers go mad and get down to the music. It’s a good feeling when you see 1,300-plus people dancing to every song you play and feeling the vibe.
What’s the weirdest thing you’ve seen out there?
Josey: The weirdest thing is when I saw somebody fall over when attempting to do the moonwalk. I’ve seen that a couple of times, and yes I laughed, but it’s all good because they are having fun.
DJ Legacy: At a New Year’s Eve gig myself and Josey did a few years back in India, Josey was shouting out ‘Yo!’ for five minutes, and the crowd was shouting ‘’Yo!’ back. That was nuts.
There are maybe famous duos in showbiz – Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder, Starsky and Hutch etc. Which famous duo are you most like and why?
DJ Legacy: I would say Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg, because they were groundbreaking. That’s exactly what we are doing here in Qatar. We are bringing that inner-city London flavour to the desert and giving the people of Doha something new and that has never been done before. A lot people said that the concept of Yo! Get Low could not be done. Those are the same people that are calling me to be on the guestlist.
What is the secret of working well together? Do you ever disagree on which music to play?
Josey: We have been disagreeing for over 10 years. I’ve been DJ’ing for 16 years and Legacy for 12, but we have been DJ’ing together for 11 years. We work well because first and foremost we love hiphop and are always willing to take risks. That’s what sets Yo! Get Low apart from all other events – we take risks with the songs we play, risks with what we say and how we entertain the crowd. Life would be boring if we didn’t, and if it did get like that then that’s when I’ll retire.
Which one of you is good cop, and who is bad cop?
Josey: Legacy is definitely good cop and I’m bad cop. That’s why he handles the business side of things. I’m a cool dude as long as you talk sense to me.
Which of you usually wins when you play paper, scissors, stone?
Josey: If we play for money, then Legacy wins. If we play for KFC, I always win.
DJ Legacy: I agree with Josey, but he only wins at KFC because he’s a Mega Bucket eater.
Is there a danger of either of you breaking away and going solo?
DJ Legacy: Well, we are solo DJs, that’s how we started. But there is no fear of us breaking up. However, when we DJ together it’s much better because you’re getting twice the chaos. We wouldn’t even say that we are DJs, we are entertainers. We entertain the crowd. When the crowd sees the DJ having fun and enjoying himself, they want to join in too. Nothing worse than seeing a DJ who looks as if he doesn’t want to be at the party.
If you could work with any other DJ, who would it be?
Josey: American hiphop artist DJ Khaled. That would be something. I like his style of rowdy, in-your-face hiphop. Also Shortee Blitz, the No 1 hiphop DJ in the UK. I have played with him many times, the first was back in 1998. He’s a great guy.
If you were both on a plummeting plane and there was only one parachute, who gets it?
Josey: Legacy would get it because he can’t be late for dinner. I would burst into the cockpit and fly the plane. Didn’t you know my middle name is Rambo?
Legacy: I would take it, as Josey’s 5XL t-shirts can act as a parachute!
Another scenario – you’re about to start your set when suddenly: chimps! Chimps invade the club, there are chimps everywhere. What do you do?
Josey: I’d play G-Unit, of course! That will get them dancing. That question was too easy.
DJ Legacy: I’d ask the promoter to double our money.
What if Qube decided to employ the chimps?
Josey: If Qube employs the chimps then I’m a monkey’s uncle.
DJ Legacy: I’d ask for triple money.
OK, last question – sell your night to us. Why should people come and see you?
DJ Legacy: Are you tired of the same old DJs playing the same old songs? Do you want to be entertained by Qatar’s No 1 hiphop DJs and dance like it’s your last day on earth? Are you are a fan of bootilicious R ’n’ B, real hiphop and blazin’ ragga music? Yes, yes, yes! Then welcome to Yo! Get Low – the biggest hiphop party in the Middle East.
Yo! Get Low will be held at Qube, Ramada Plaza Doha (428 1673) on Friday, March 26. Members free before 10pm, QR80 after. Membership is essential, call for details.
