Shanzelize Palace in Doha

If you visit just one shop during your time in Doha, make it Shanzelize Palace. This tiny shop (we say tiny, it really only has the appearance of being small, it’s crammed so full) is so hilariously un-selective about its stock that we wager you could find just about anything buried in its dusty depths.

We’ve found everything from old black and white photos of Tibetan monks to a taxidermied stingray in amongst piles of rusty keys, vintage tills, old clocks, watches, typewriters, antique cameras and collectible coins and stamps.

There’s even a bunch of un-opened 7up cans that look like they came straight from someone’s fridge and a selection of biscuit and chocolate tins that don’t actually look particularly antique.

Everything is roughly – and helpfully –divided into sections so you can move between piles of crockery covered in portraits of the British royal family, to heaps of Coke memorabilia.

It’s less a place to find that statement piece of furniture that you feel your house is missing, more somewhere to pick up subtly unusual bits and bobs. Perhaps even a comical gift for that difficult-to-buy-for family member. But no matter how many times you visit, you’re bound to unearth the unexpected and discover countless surprises – it’s easy to spend hours and hours lost between the shelves, rummaging through old letters in numerous languages and browsing old Arabic records. We recommend you do.

Open daily 10am-11pm. Mirqab Al Jadeed Street, Al Nasr, next to Thai Snack (no number).
