Valentine’s for… the forgetful

Valentine’s Day planners tend to fall into two camps – there are those who start the planning back in January, carefully carving a life-size effigy of their beloved out of granite and cheese; and others who get out of bed on February 14 with a niggling feeling that something’s up, shortly followed by a heartbroken partner attacking them with a spatula. If you fall into the latter category then fear not: there is still a chance for you to make amends.

The first thing to do is lie. Under no circumstances admit you’ve forgotten this manufactured Hallmark-ed holiday; just buy yourself time with promises of great things to come. Getting a table at a swanky restaurant will be tough at this late stage, so take advantage of single reservation numbers, which can be called to check availability at multiple establishments in one go. Try Grand Hyatt Doha (448 1234), The Ritz-Carlton Doha (484 8000) or W Doha Hotel (453 5353). If that fails (which is likely) you’re going to have to think outside the box.

Head to the gourmet food shop at La Cigalon restaurant in La Cigale (428 8888) and choose from the selection of smoked meats, salads and international cheeses. Alternatively head to Le Notre on Salwa Road (455 2111) or at the Villaggio Mall (450 7255) for sandwiches, salads, calzone and ice cream. If you really want to go to town (or to the souk), the gelato at La Dolce Vita in Souk Waqif (430 7991) is divine. Basically, get everything you need to stage the perfect picnic.

Picking the best spot is a tricky one – the Corniche is the most obvious one, and there are a number of good spots, but you may want to secure one early in case other people get the same idea. Nearby Al Bida Park may be somewhere to consider too. You could also give the beach a try – there are a number in the West Bay area, or maybe try Al Khor or Al Wakra if you don’t mind a drive.
