Useful information

Local etiquette
• Do not extend your hand to a local of the opposite sex, even in business, unless he/she shakes first. Always shake hands with the same sex.

• Avoid showing the soles of your feet to Qatari hosts. As a means of respect, don’t sit with your back to other guests, and when seated cross-legged, don’t point the foot of the crossed leg to an Arab.

• It is unacceptable for men to stare at Qatari women.

• If eating with your fingers, only eat with your right hand. In Muslim conventions the left is reserved for bodily functions. Also try to avoid handing over or accepting items with your left.

• Public displays of affection are considered offensive, though you will see close friends touching each other’s faces and linking arms.

• Don’t eat, drink or smoke in public during Ramadan, when Muslims don’t let anything pass through their lips from sunrise to sunset.

• Always make an effort to wear conservative clothing.

• If you wish to take pictures of Qataris, always ask first, as some may be offended.
