Doha Tribeca Film Festival 2012Be the first to comment 31 October 2012
DTFF is back for its fourth year this month and it’s bigger and shiner than ever. Four years ago, it was just a long weekend with a handful of great movies: today it’s an eight day cinema extravaganza. Moved from its customary October spot to Nov 17-24 this year, festival organizers are taking full advantage of the cooler weather with more outdoor screenings than ever before, this year all for free.
More films aren’t the only thing that’s changed this year: DTFF is headed all over the city, with screenings scheduled at Souq Waqif, Katara and the Museum of Islamic Art, as well as the Sony Open Air Cinema on the Katara Esplanade. They’ve expanded the Family Day as well, with several days of special screenings, activities and even kids-only red carpets. And alongside it all are perennial favourites, like the Doha Talks series of lectures and Q&As, and this year’s musical performance, an Arab Hip Hop concert. This year they’re going back to their roots, with a focus on regional cinema, including Made in Qatar screenings of both short films and full length features made right here in Doha. And with over 1000 community volunteers helping to keep the lights on and the popcorn popped, this year is a real local affair.
