This trio, Patrizia Doeringer on violin, Christoph Schmitz on the cello and Joris Laenen on the piano, met while performing with the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra.
They play a mixture of milongas and waltzes, tango nueve and more, sometimes adding Paz Linares, an Argentinean singer, to the mix. ‘People seem to love it! We play regular tango nights in the Kempinski Hotel and it’s always sold out, there’s even a waiting list,’ says Joris. ‘People always come up to us asking when we perform next so I’d say the response is pretty darn good!’
They love it too. ‘Music is not only a passion, for us it’s a way of life! It’s not only love, but also a bit of hate... and a bit of everything else,’ says Joris. ‘What we love about it mostly is the way tango music can express a certain pain. The pain of existence or something.’
For them, the more chances they have to perform—and for people to hear live music—the better. ‘Live music is an experience. Every time we play is different. It’s an interaction between us, the performers and our audience so it all depends on the atmosphere,’ says Joris. ‘We’ve had really crazy performances with people cheering but sometimes it can also be very intimate. We try to touch people’s souls but also to make sure they’re having a good time. You can only get that with a live performance!’
