Player to watch: Karim Benzema.
Having struggled to find form and convince the previous France manager to include him in his line-up, Benzema has finally been finding the net and turning out strong performances – both for the national side and his club, Real Madrid. The 23-year-old striker made his professional debut with Lyon in 2004 but had to wait another three years for his breakthrough season, in which he netted 31 goals in 51 games. After signing for Real Madrid in 2009, Benzema has grown season by season and is now rightly seen as a potent attacking force, having already surpassed Zinedine Zidane as the top French scorer in Spain’s La Liga.
