Le Mer: Le Mer is the granddaddy of posh restaurants in Doha, and it’s got old school charm sewed up. From the red velvet curtains over the floor-to-ceiling windows, the stunning views of the sea, and the classic European dishes on offer, it’s the type of restaurant we pictured our Barbie’s going for romantic dates when we were six. The tables are set up around the perimeter of the room, taking advantage of the windows and giving each table an excellent view, at the same time making it feel intimate, as if you’d booked the entire restaurant just for the two of you. Everything has that hushed, traditional feel to it that just makes you want to expect a proposal at a nearby table, or at the very least someone to catch someone’s fingers in a jewellery box playfully à la Richard Gere. The food’s also sufficiently fancy to impress, while harkening back to the classic European dishes that form the basis for much of fine dining, making them reassuringly familiar.
