15 great Doha road trips
6 Comments 27 December 2011Mission: Catch crabs
Destination: Wakra and Shamal, along the Northern coast
How to get there: Drive North on the Dukhan highway until you see the sea.
Journey time: Over an hour
Thanks to Qatar’s fantastically clean water and cooler weather bringing ‘creatures crabby’ closer to shore, this time of year you can literally just walk into the sea and immediately catch something with pinchers. Head north of the city and keep your eyes peeled for rocky stretches of beach: that’s where crabs like to hide. Although you can buy netted baskets and other tools, why not go old school MacGyver? Grab a piece of rope, hold it in the water in a ‘U’ shape. Curious crabs will approach, all you have to do is wait for them to grab the rope bait and you can pull them up!
Extra fun: Bring cooking supplies and have a beach side fresh seafood feast.

the directions you gave regarding the singing sand dunes are incorrect - these are the same directions that are on many OLD websites, forums and blogs found on a Google search!! We made the mistake of using the same directions last December, we found them eventually but not with the directions, they weren't even close!!! I am happy to provide exact directions of how to get there! But I do think the journalists who write these articles should try these things out to make sure the information they have is correct as I know many people who have used those directions and failed to get to the singing sand dunes and have since given up after many failed attempts!

I like crabbing!
For Qatar newcomers the information presented may cause confusion.
1. Wakra is not on the Northern coast
2. Dukhan Highway spans east-west not North. Do you mean drive north on the Al Shamal Highway?
3. The picture shown here is Inland Sea near Rock Islands where three small rocks jutted out of the sea, and where there is coastguard stations. No dunes in Wakra and Shamal.
Nevertheless, good work.
