15 great Doha road trips
6 Comments 27 December 2011Mission: Check out the Northern stronghold
Destination: Al-Zubara Fort
Journey time: over an hour
Directions: Follow the highway North from Doha around 100km. The Fort is located at the intersection of the road to Al-Ruweis.
Zubara Fort is smack in the centre of what used to be the commercial and pearling port in the 18th and 19th centuries, when Qatar was under the rule of Al-Khalifa (now the ruling family in Bahrain). The Fort itself was built in 1938 and used by the military well into the 1980s. Now, it’s a museum, open from 8am-1pm and 4pm-7pm Sunday-Thursday, 4pm-7pm on Friday, with entrance by donation of QR1-QR2. It houses pottery and archaeology exhibits, however the real draw is the strikingly bleak and austere views from the battlements.
Tip: Just a bit further north you’ll find rocky beaches. Cool enough on their own, but if you look out across the water, you can wave at Bahrain. Its lights are especially visible at night.

the directions you gave regarding the singing sand dunes are incorrect - these are the same directions that are on many OLD websites, forums and blogs found on a Google search!! We made the mistake of using the same directions last December, we found them eventually but not with the directions, they weren't even close!!! I am happy to provide exact directions of how to get there! But I do think the journalists who write these articles should try these things out to make sure the information they have is correct as I know many people who have used those directions and failed to get to the singing sand dunes and have since given up after many failed attempts!

I like crabbing!
For Qatar newcomers the information presented may cause confusion.
1. Wakra is not on the Northern coast
2. Dukhan Highway spans east-west not North. Do you mean drive north on the Al Shamal Highway?
3. The picture shown here is Inland Sea near Rock Islands where three small rocks jutted out of the sea, and where there is coastguard stations. No dunes in Wakra and Shamal.
Nevertheless, good work.
