Fans of scary movies, this one is for you. And if you like your horror films based on real-life events, and if being able to scream your lungs out in front of the big screen is usually high up in your reasons to visit the cinema, you’re probably going to like Winchester.

The events take place about 80km outside of San Francisco, in the middle of nowhere. It tells the story of a house that Sarah Winchester built.

Following the death of her husband and child, Sarah Winchester (Helen Mirren) throws herself into the task of building a mansion with more than 160 rooms. Working all day, every day, it takes decades. And the result looks terrifying.

Then, when psychiatrist doctor Eric Price (Jason Clarke) is dispatched to the estate to evaluate Sarah’s mental health, things really start to go, well, bump in the night, if you like.

From the trailer, this looks like one seriously creepy abode (see blood dripping down the walls), with Helen Mirren as Sarah Winchester appearing enigmatic, stern and, well, very strange.

We love Price’s line: “I do not believe in anything I cannot see… or study…” Well, Dr Price, you might just want to rethink that.

The bottom line
Give yourself the jitters at this creepy flick.
