For a moment, it seemed doomed. But now, after an extraordinary piece of movie magic, Ridley Scott’s latest is back, and very much part of the Oscar race.

It’s the true story of the kidnapping of 16-year-old John Paul Getty III and the desperate attempt by his mother to convince his billionaire grandfather, Jean Paul Getty, to pay the ransom. But incredible though that tale is, the draw here is, of course, the fact that, with the movie finished and about to be released, director Scott had to entirely replace Kevin Spacey (as Getty Sr) with Christopher Plummer, after the Spacey scandal broke. It’s an awesome achievement and just begs to be seen.

The bottom line:
An amazing story. In more ways than one.
