How to Be a Latin Lover

Not, tragically, an academic treatise on the study of the language that started them all (someone needs to make that, by the way, probably starring Adam Sandler) but a bawdy Mexican comedy starring Eugenio Derbez as the ageing man of the title.

Like its leading man, the movie suffers from commitment issues, uncertain whether it wants to be tender or outrageous. But its simplistic premise – Derbez is an ageing gold-digger, thrown out by his sugar mama when a young Lamborghini salesman (played, of course, by Michael Cera) catches her eye, and must learn about actual love – still delivers enough wit and brio, and a cracking cast.

Alongside the game Derbez, Salma Hayek (as his sister), Rob Lowe (a rival gold-digger) and Kristen Bell (a yoghurt shop employee meets mad cat lady) provide quality support, and someone’s even persuaded Raquel Welch to come out of self-imposed retirement for a simply show-stopping turn.

It’s so light a sort of early Pedro Almodovar that it might just take off and float away, but its box office will be interesting. Derbez is a Hispanic superstar. Can he cross over with this? On this evidence, he should.

The bottom line

A bawdy romp with a quality comedy cast.
