Although Bad Moms was written and directed by the creators of the uneven Hangover trilogy, any hopes that it will play out as an oestrogen-charged, misbehaviour-fuelled farce are quickly squashed.

Instead of all-nighters culminating in facial tattoos and kidnappings in exotic locales, these errant mothers instead elect to go to the supermarket and then sneak out for an unauthorised spa day.

Despite the current cinematic climate (all-female Ghostbusters and anticipated returns of Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel), Bad Moms marks a low point for some of Hollywood’s leading ladies.

Young mums Amy, Carla and Kiki (Mila Kunis, Kathryn Hahn and Kristen Bell) live in a bland Illinois suburb, for which the movie’s lazy sitcom-style cinematography does no favours. Even the introduction of nemeses Gwendolyn, Vicky and Stacy (Christina Applegate, Annie Mumolo and Jada Pinkett Smith) can’t save this script.

The bottom line Unwelcome return to chick-flick banality.
